Hahndorf in the Adelaide Hills is a small town that is also Australia's oldest German settlement. Popular with tourists who visit the town to enjoy the German architecture and authentic German cuisine, Hahndorf was originally settled by Lutheran immigrants. Situated 28 kilometres from Adelaide, Hahndorf was renamed Ambleside during WWI. The name Hahndorf was reinstated in 1935.

Hahndorf is a charming town that recalls the past with numerous Fachwerk buildings, many of which have been restored and maintained in their original condition. The main street is lined with 100-year-old elm and plane trees, which add to the nostalgic village like charm of the town. The addition of chic new businesses, have only added to the appeal of Hahndorf, promoting a lively atmosphere in the main street, which is lined with clothing and gift stores, galleries, hotels, cafes and restaurants.

Nearby, there are a range of wineries offering a delightful selection of cold climate wines, as well as Beerenberg Farm, where you can pick your own produce. Art lovers will revel being able to access the home and studio of Hans Heysen (famous Australian landscape painter) and the Hahndorf Academy, which showcases the work of local artists and houses the Visitor Information Centre.

Hahndorf is a truly delightful place to visit, with a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets. As the gateway to the fascinating Adelaide Hills, there is no better place to stay before setting off on adventures into the surrounding regions.
